Think Home Security
Think home security is the message that the BSIA is sending out to homeowners in light of the recent British Crime Survey, the findings of which demonstrate that basic security measures are an effective defence against burglary.
The research shows that households with no home security measures are around ten times more likely to have been victims of burglary than households where there are simple security measures in place.
BSIA Technical Manager, David Wilkinson, comments: "Your home contains many attractive items to burglars as well as personal possessions which mean a lot to you. By ensuring fundamental security measures are in place, homeowners can protect their homes and property by deterring thieves from attempting a break-in. Home security should make a burglar's job too difficult, time-consuming, noisy or risky, compared to alternative targets. Without such measures you are much more at risk of becoming a victim of burglary."
"he first layer of security for any home should be physical measures such as quality locks, doors and gates. A basic, monitored intruder alarm is also an important measure to deter a criminal from entering a property. Ensuring your possessions are marked with a property marking system and registered on a secure database will mean that if a burglary does take place and your possessions are recovered, they can be returned to you."
"It is imperative that security measures are sourced from professional companies who comply with appropriate standards. This will mean that you will have peace of mind that your home security measures are of the highest quality."
The BSIA website provides details of member companies who comply with the relevant British & European Standards.
